COVID-19 Update

January 12, 2022

Now 2 years into the pandemic, COVID-19 continues to have a significant impact on public health.

The Omicron variant was first identified in South Africa and has quickly spread, making its way to the United States. Unfortunately, data shows Omicron is spreading at a much higher rate than other variants, including Delta. Breakthrough infections are more common than with previous variants, but vaccinations are still proven to be safe and effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

If you are fully vaccinated…

  • Wear a mask indoors if transmission rates are high/substantial in the area.
  • Wear a mask indoors if you or someone in your household is at increased risk of severe disease.

If you are not fully vaccinated…

  • Continue wearing a mask indoors and even outdoors if you are in close contact with other people.
  • Consult with your doctor about getting a COVID-19 vaccine. Getting vaccinated remains the best way to keep you and your loved ones safe from severe disease. Vaccines are widely available, safe, and effective in preventing severe disease. If you do have any questions or concerns, please find reputable sources, like your physician, to address them.

What is the current status of the vaccine mandate?

Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments as to the legality of OSHA’s Vaccination and Testing mandate. Being that the court hadn’t yet made a ruling, as of January 10th, the vaccine and testing mandate for companies with 100 employees or more went into effect.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court made a ruling to block the mandate that private companies over 100 employees require vaccination or weekly testing of their employees, with the exception of healthcare facilities.

As for healthcare facilities, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold the mandate administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. The mandate affects 17 million healthcare facilities and applies to those that receive Medicare or Medicaid funds. Workers are required to achieve full vaccination without a testing alternative.

There are still many ongoing developments regarding the legal battles surrounding the vaccine and testing requirements.
